👀 Experiencing constipation with hypothyroidism

👀 Experiencing constipation with hypothyroidism is incredibly common, yet many of us are too embarrassed to talk about it and ask if it is ‘normal’.

👀 Regular bowel movements are crucial to good health, so constipation really shouldn’t be ignored.

👀 With low thyroid hormone (hypothyroidism), many of the body’s functions slow down, which can include the digestive tract. The muscles that contract to move stools through your intestine and to the rectum for release, depend on thyroid hormone. Without enough thyroid hormone, they can slow down immensely.

👀 Other issues can also co-exist with hypothyroidism, such as poor gut health and vitamin and mineral deficiencies (mentioned below), which can contribute to poor bowel movements.

👍 Things To Help:

• Optimising thyroid treatment
• Eat plenty of fibre
• Drink plenty of water
• Gut health: look in to probiotics, digestive enzymes, etc.
• Magnesium citrate can help
• If you’re taking iron, switching to a non-constipating version such as bisglycinate can help
• Get daily exercise
• When you need to go, go! Avoid holding in a bowel movement when you feel the need to go and let your body reestablish a routine for emptying its bowels.

〰️ Life ebbs and flows. With thyroid disease, I find it helpful to accept that your health will move around. It’s common to feel good for a while and then for symptoms to crop back up or thyroid hormone levels to change again.

〰️ I used to be obsessed with the idea of reaching this one place: of my health being completely fixed and my thyroid condition being behind me.

🤦🏼‍♀️

It’s not going anywhere. The best thing I can do is to learn to accept and understand whatever place I’m in now. Currently.

✔️We have flares. They pass.

✔️Test results show levels have changed again. We alter meds and feel better.

✔️Chapters come and go and we’re not always in control of them. But we can control how we approach changes.

👍 For me, I acknowledge the current issue, put together a plan and work to address it, all the while aware that things will change again soon. It’s not forever. I have trust in myself to go on to a new chapter soon.

This is what a lot of my days look like at the mom

This is what a lot of my days look like at the moment, as I juggle working on The Invisible Hypothyroidism’s thyroid advocacy work and being a mum of two under 3 years old.

I’ve been running my own business for 7.5 years now, but as my only job (quitting the ‘day job’) for 4.5 years, and many aspects of this can be hard; juggling kids alongside being a big one.

They play on the floor next to me as I create social media posts. They sit in my lap as I work on my latest book (and smash the keyboard as I try to work!). They’re running around the room as I write my email newsletters. And I take calls and podcast interviews when they’re in bed in the evenings. I’m often exhausted.

I resonate with @deborahpanesar when she says that she feels guilt on a daily basis for never been 100% focused on work OR parenting. But that’s my reality as a self employed parent.

However, I wouldn’t change a thing either. I love being a mum. And I love working for myself, with the flexibility in work my health often needs. I love having a ‘job’ that is so impactful, too. It’s rewarding and keeps me going on my own tough health days.

I also love modelling what a woman running a business looks like to them. How we juggle it all. What a force we can be.

But it’s a constant juggle i don’t think I’ll ever feel is perfect.
