🗣️ I asked on a post a few days ago what your most bothersome thyroid symptoms are and fatigue was the most reported.

It always is.

🩶 Thyroid fatigue can feel overwhelming, debilitating and unlike anything else.

🩶 It’s not the same as ‘regular tired’. Thyroid fatigue is often described as an overall exhaustion of every inch of the body; as if you’re dragging a dead weight along.

🩶 A lot of thyroid patients wake up in the morning and no matter how good a night’s sleep they get, never feel refreshed. They often wake up feeling more tired.

💖 Here are the key things to check if this is you:

• That thyroid hormone levels are optimised - not too high or too low.

• Whether you have Hashimoto’s (if your hypothyroidism is autoimmune) and what may help to control this.

• That Vit D, iron, B12, folate etc. are all optimised. They can also cause fatigue and are commonly low in us!

• If adrenal dysfunction plays a part. This is when the normal slope of cortisol is altered.

😫 Many people living with hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s report muscle and joint pain being among the most bothersome symptoms.

😫 As well as the intense fatigue that hypothyroidism can cause, aches, pains, stiffness and weakness in joints (such as the knees and fingers) and muscles (such as the calves, back and feet) are well reported. I’ve had experience with it myself.

🌙 Hypothyroid myopathy keep us awake at night, cause us to need regular painkillers just to get through the day and make physical activity difficult to bear.

• Possible Solutions •

👍 Ensuring Ft3 and Ft4 levels are optimised.

👍 Lowering thyroid antibodies.

👍 Optimising B12, Vit D, iron, folate etc. They are commonly low with a thyroid condition.

👍 Magnesium spray, Epsom salts, massage, acupuncture, bath and leg soaks.

👍 Addressing high cortisol if it’s present (adrenal dysfunction).

👍 Addressing fluid retention if present.

👍 Trialling some dietary changes. A lot of people report going gluten-free helps. See my previous post on this though, including why we should test for coeliac beforehand.

🛑 Some key notes:

• It’s great if you can carry on largely unaffected with thyroid issues, but you’re lucky if so. Not everyone can.

• Thyroid disease affects people on a scale. Some are in excruciating muscle pain, heavily fatigued, depressed and more. Not everyone responds well to initial treatment.

• For many, “pushing through” winds them up in an even worse place for their health. I did this for years and ended up practically bedbound.

• It’s not about letting it ‘rule’ your life, it’s about finding balance and your body crashing if you don’t listen to it.

• A positive attitude doesn’t override a physical, chronic illness. No amount of thinking positively will make my thyroid work better unfortunately.

•No two experiences of chronic illness are the same! Don’t be ignorant.

• And it’s not a competition. You don’t get points for invalidating someone else’s experiences.

• All of this is from someone who’s lived both sides of it. I’ve been bedbound and with an almost nonexistent quality of life with thyroid disease. I’m also currently living symptom-free.
