❓Taking your thyroid meds before a test can cause levels to peak and look higher than they actually are for most the day.

So you’ll get a more accurate result if you take them after the test.

❓Biotin can cause falsely elevated thyroid levels on test results, making you look overmedicated or hyperthyroid when you’re not. Therefore, it is advised to not take it for at least 48-hours before a thyroid blood test.

❓Fasting - researchers have found that after eating, our TSH level becomes suppressed. Therefore, your TSH level is likely to be at its highest and most reflective of its underlying status, when tested after fasting, in the early morning.

❓ Each time you have your thyroid tests done, you should aim for it to always be done at the same time, and under the same circumstances (i.e. fasting), so they’re as accurate and comparable as possible.
Given that you shouldn’t take your medication until after the draw, as early as possible in the morning and before 9am is preferable.

🎄Christmas is supposed to be fun for all, but for many with physical health conditions (and often mental health conditions too) it can feel extra stressful and difficult.

In The Run Up To Xmas:

❓ Are you pacing yourself?

Plan tasks on a physical calendar or diary. For example, any present buying, card writing, catching up with friends and family.

Ensure you have adequate time to complete them, scheduling in time to recuperate and rest also.

I like to write “rest day” on days to remind me to actually keep that one free for some recuperation.

❓Does it prevent any thyroid flares at all over this period? Nope.

But it does reduce them.

🧩 Symptoms of imbalanced blood sugar can include headaches, hangriness, feeling faint, dizzy, feeling hungry again quickly after eating, feeling tired, grouchy and irritable.

🩸 Research has shown that having Hashimoto’s puts us at an increased risk of blood sugar imbalances or glycemic impairments and this then places extra stress on our adrenals, which isn’t helpful.

🩸The glycemic index is a measurement of how quickly we burn food, and simple carbohydrates such as refined white sugar, refined flour, white rice, white bread, semolina, potatoes and carrots all have a very quick burn rate.

🩸Because of this, when eaten, they can cause a spike in our blood sugar, followed by a crash soon after.

🥘 This is where more protein-rich diets can be better for us.

🐠 Fat and protein have a slower burn rate. They are absorbed more slowly and do not raise blood sugar levels as quickly as simple carbs do. They also keep us fuller for longer.

🫒 Healthy fats play a big role in our mental health and moods, brain function, energy levels, weight management and hormonal health.

❓I ensure I consume enough protein in every meal and snack, in order to keep my blood sugar levels balanced and promote ongoing, stable energy levels.

🥣 Good sources of protein can include meats, cheese, eggs, nuts, seeds, yoghurts, beans and legumes.

🥑 Good sources of fat include olive oil, sesame oil, avocados, olives, nuts, seeds, peanut butter, flaxseed, salmon, chia seeds, eggs and seed butter.

❓We can aim to eat every two to three hours to keep blood sugar levels balanced and adrenals functioning happy.

❓Going long times without food, such as fasting, can place extra stress on the adrenal glands. So don’t skip breakfast either!

❗️Making these changes to my diet have brought my Hashimoto’s in to remission, improved fatigue, brain fog and heart palpitations. I just feel SO much better eating this way. It’s been an important piece of my thyroid jigsaw puzzle.

🎄This time of year is known for being fun, enjoyable, a great opportunity to catch up with friends and family and take a break from work.

🎄However, once I developed autoimmune hypothyroidism, and during the time it took for me to get it better managed, I learned some key lessons in surviving the festive season with my thyroid condition so that I could still enjoy it without becoming unwell.

🎄After all, none of us want a thyroid flare for Christmas!
