This is Part Six of my selection of songs that motivate, inspire, uplift or otherwise connect with me on tough health days.

You can also see: part onepart twopart three, part four, part five

I find music to be the best remedy for when I’m feeling low, fed up, defeated or frustrated, especially during thyroid flare up periods, so I’m going to share my favourites for when I feel down, defeated, frustrated or otherwise struggling. I hope you like them too.

You can find the playlist on my YouTube channel here.

Here are my next ten songs, numbers 51 to 60.

51. Written in The Scars by The Script

If it’s hurting right now
If it’s hurting right now
It’s gonna make us who we are
It’s written in the scars

I find the lyrics of this song so reassuring when I’m struggling with bad thyroid symptoms.

52. This is Me by The Greatest Showman

This song was hugely popular at the beginning of 2018, due its inspiring and touching lyrics. As well as being relatable to those with physical health struggles, it also talks to those who may be struggling mentally too.

When the sharpest words wanna cut me down
I’m gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out
I am brave, I am bruised
I am who I’m meant to be, this is me
Look out ’cause here I come
And I’m marching on to the beat I drum
I’m not scared to be seen
I make no apologies, this is me

53. Head Above Water by Avril Lavigne

This is such an emotional song and should appeal to anyone who’s having a tough day health-wise. As well as the lyrics, the power of this ballad and Avril’s voice is enough to give you goosebumps.

And I can’t see in the stormy weather
I can’t seem to keep it all together
And I, I can’t swim the ocean like this forever
And I can’t breathe

54. Don’t Feel Like Crying by Sigrid

I find that this song is great for singing aloud to when I need to pick myself back up and carry on. It’s easy to get stuck in a bad place, but this song reminds me that I can try to overcome the struggle.

Ooh, yeah
I dry my eyes ’cause I don’t feel like crying
Ooh, yeah
At least tonight, no, I don’t feel like crying

55. Scars To Your Beautiful by Alessia Cara

A lot of thyroid patients struggle with how thyroid conditions change their appearance. Whether it’s in their body shape, hair, skin etc.

This song is a beautiful tribute to anyone who feels less than as beautiful as they are right now.

But there’s a hope that’s waiting for you in the dark
You should know you’re beautiful just the way you are
And you don’t have to change a thing, the world could change its heart
No scars to your beautiful, we’re stars and we’re beautiful

56. Like a Satellite by Jonathon Murrill

I just love to listen to this song and have a good boogie when I feel down or unmotivated thanks to thyroid disease. It never fails to uplift me and put me in a good mood.

57. ME! by Taylor Swift and Brendan Urie

If you need a song to feel good about yourself and celebrate all that you are, this is the one. Having a health condition may affect your confidence or belief in yourself.

58. Pompeii by Bastille

I was left to my own devices
Many days fell away with nothing to show
And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Grey clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above

This song speaks to me in that I feel it talks about feeling lonely and as if you’re not in control of what’s going on around you. I.e. your health.

59. A Little Bit Longer by The Jonas Brothers

This song was inspired by one of the band member’s experiences with type 1 diabetes. It expresses his emotions about being hospitalised and living with an incurable illness.

All this time goes by
Still no reason why
A little bit longer and I’ll be fine
Waiting on a cure
But none of them are sure
A little bit longer and I’ll be fine

60. Believer by Imagine Dragons

The lead singer of Imagine Dragons, Dan Reynolds, lives with ankylosing spondylitis, a form of arthritis that primarily affects the spine and can impact mental health, just like many other health conditions.

Reynolds was influenced by both his physical and mental health struggles to write this song, telling People, “The song is about how pain made me a believer. It’s made me a believer in myself, it’s made me a believer in my art and work. I wouldn’t have my art if it wasn’t for pain.”

This list is kind of creepy in a way. 5 of the 10 have already been on my personal playlist for a while now. And I too feel strongly connected to music when I’m struggling. My boyfriend doesn’t get it. He’s always turning my music down or off so he can concentrate. I totally forwarded this to him.

Great picks – I LOVE that Greatest Showman track, the whole film had an amazing soundtrack but that one in particular really is incredibly powerful!
